Why SKB Law is building a law firm with social impact
What type of legal community do we want to build? At SKB Law, we’re improving access to law for everyone through inclusive and innovative legal services and training. In this video, our founder Sarah Khan-Bashir MBE shares why her firm has a mission, how it supports our work and advice for firms interested in building mission into their work.
On 24 March 2020, SKB Law’s founder Sarah Khan-Bashir MBE joined world-leading legal software provider Clio to discuss why she’s building her law firm with social impact. You can watch the video below.
The SKB Law Academy
In 2018, Sarah and Mandip launched the SKB Law Academy – the firm’s in-house learning platform to support more young people and women to access the law. Since then, we’ve launched employability workshops for students, structured work placements for aspiring legal professionals and free legal clinics for women. In total, the firm’s social impact has reached over 1000 members of our community since 2018. Sarah was Highly Commended for her work in the 2019 Law Society Excellence Awards.
This year, in response to COVID-19 restrictions and the cancellation of student placements, we started Legal Stories by SKB Law. Our first series is a collection of ‘in-conversation’ videos between law students and legal professionals from our network.
Our Tips If You Want Build A Mission-Driven Law Firm
In this video, Sarah shares her four tips on how more firms can integrate social impact into their law firms:
- PLAN – consider which issues matter and align with your firm and local community
- INTEGRATE – embed a culture of learning and innovation. At SKB Law, our Academy is more than an ‘add-on’ – it’s core to the firm’s culture (and even features in our logo!)
- EXPLORE – find ways to collaborate with new partners and consider who else should be part of your team i.e. tech, innovators, educators
- LISTEN and LEARN – ask for feedback and adapt your programming accordingly
